Does whey protein break a fast?

Yes. A 30 g scoop of whey has about 120 calories and 24 g of protein. It breaks a fast for weight loss, autophagy and gut rest.

Grey area

A typical scoop of whey protein powder (about 30 g) has about 120 calories and 24 g of protein. Many fasters use a 50-calorie line, which is a common rule of thumb, not an official limit. One scoop is more than twice that, so whey breaks a weight-loss fast. A protein drink also has to be digested, so it breaks a gut-rest fast as well.

Autophagy is the strictest of the four goals this site uses, and protein is the reason whey fails it. In cell and animal studies, amino acids such as leucine switch on mTOR, a nutrient sensor that turns autophagy down. Nobody has shown yet whether a protein drink does the same during a fast in people. That evidence is only from lab and animal studies.

For blood sugar the answer is a grey area. Whey is mostly protein, yet it raises insulin strongly for a protein food. In one study, a meal with whey raised insulin 90% more than a white-bread meal. That is early evidence from a single study.

Whey fits best inside your eating window, for example in the meal that breaks your fast. People who exercise are advised 1.4 to 2.0 g of protein per kg of body weight a day. For a 70 kg (154 lb) person, that is 98 to 140 g, so one 24 g scoop covers part of it. If your powder or ready-made shake is flavoured, check its label for sugar as well.

What you eat with the shake can matter too. In a small study of 11 adults with type 2 diabetes, eating protein and vegetables before carbohydrate lowered the blood-sugar rise after the meal. That is early evidence.

Watch out

Half a scoop is still about 60 calories and 12 g of protein, which is above the 50-calorie line. Other protein powders, such as collagen, also break a fast for autophagy.

Questions people ask

When can you drink protein shakes during intermittent fasting?

In your eating window. A shake during the fasting window ends the fast for weight loss, autophagy and gut rest. It fits well in the meal that breaks your fast.

What is the best protein shake for intermittent fasting?

Any plain protein shake works if you drink it in your eating window. Compare labels for calories, protein per scoop and added sugar. No protein shake keeps you fasted if you drink it during the fast.

Is whey protein useful on intermittent fasting?

Whey can help you reach a protein target when you eat fewer meals. Adults over 65 are advised at least 1.0 to 1.2 g of protein per kg a day, and people who exercise more. Have it with a meal, not during the fast.
